Hiram's mother wishes her husband would re-establish his relationship with his father. This is one of the reasons she pushes for Hiram to stay on after Grandma's death, and one of the reasons she steps in and hugs Hiram when the two disagree on Grandpa's plans. Hiram's mother's actions in supporting his relationship with his grandfather also support a reunion with her husband.
