Mr. Paul is the local storeowner. Like Hiram's father, he encourages him to do the right thing regardless of the outcome. Paul also plays the role of trusted mentor. He is fatherly in his actions, and always looks out for him. His influence is obvious in Hiram's reactions. Mr. Paul does not see the world in the same way as Hiram's grandfather.
