The horses are disappearing because the people are using them for food.

In the beginning there were horses in the ghetto, but then they began to disappear. Sometimes parts of them reappeared on Gesia Street. Gesia Street became an outdoor market. It was known that if you had food to sell, that was where you went. People stood on the sidewalk in the snow.
