The use of the love potion flower and the confusion that it causes is part of the scene in the forest which all seems fantastical. The forest section is, in some ways, disconnected from the rest of the play, but it also adds much of the comedy because of all the confusion. The audience especially laughs because they understand "who is really who" and why things are happening as they are. This, in fact, makes nearly every action more humorous and thus more effective.
