I suppose there is some "romance" and suspense but it is tainted by the darker subtext of what is actually going on. Although Lorenzo claims to love Jessicca, a Jew, we are not entirely convinced he feels she is worthy of him. He constantly refers to her as a Jew and seems eager to take shylock's money. The atmosphere of discrimination is so strong against Jews that it is difficult to accept Lorenzo's love of Jessica at face value.
