I don't think there is a "hero" in the play. Although considered a comedy, there are tragic elements to it. Antonio can be seen as heroic but there is a sadness and desperation about him that makes us think he is merely a victim of his unrequited love for Bassanio. Shylock is cast as a villain in the play. Certainly Shakespeare wants the reader/audience to find sympathies within the character of Shylock as well.
