Medea believes that "women are the most unfortunate of all living creatures" because of the patriarchal society in which they live. Women are left to the devices of their husbands and are unable to stand up for themselves or object to their husband's actions. A women's role and status in society are effected by their husband's actions, specifically, Medea loses her standing and status when she is abandoned by Jason for another woman.
