Why does lolek decide not to hide in the bunkers behind the "tunnel made from shoes"?

Lolek refuses stating that he is tired of hiding. Soon after, he is soon transported to Auschwitz. He survives the camps and eventually becomes a college professor. So yes, I guess he made the right decision. He was a survivor.
