Vladek is much less self-absorbed when he was younger. When we see him in the book during the war, he is merely trying to stay alive. When he is older Vladek has all the baggage of so many years in the Hell that was WW2 for Polish Jews. When he is older Vladek carries out many of the traits that enabled him to survive so many years ago. Consequently he appears cheap, miserly, self absorbed and rather depressed.
