Vladek and Mala share a past as Holocaust survivors, but it doesn't seem that their marriage has any other commonalities. They argue constantly, and their marriage appears to be filled with stress..... loveless. Vladek continues to mourn the death of his first wife, and he complains that Mala is always looking to spend more of his money.

“You should know it’s impossible to argue with your father.”
Mala: Pragmatic? Cheap!! It causes him physical pain to part with even a nickel!
