why did spiegelman choose to use the comic book form to tell a story about the holocaust?

Because it was neat. He needed a way to explain to himself and rationalize the events of the holocost. The clean boxes and cartoon illustrations allowed him to do it. More simply it was a trade he knew, he had a better chance of finding artistic fulfillment (as well as cathartic fulfullment) by sticking to an art he knew well. Further, the beast epic form he chose allowed him to highlight the obsurdity of grouping people by race or nationality.
