What is the meaning of the beard and skullcap that Vladek's father is shown wearing in the panels on page 46? What happens to his beard later on?

This particular depiction indicates that Vladek was a devout and traditional, Hasidic Jew (Orthodox). Later in the novel, Vladek's beard is shaved off by the Germans.
