Initially Vladek doesn't want to share his stories, they are simply too painful to return to. Although he tries to lock them away, they still haunt him.

Vladek's incessant hoarding is a trait left over from his days during the war. Finding and re-using things, in part, enabled Vladek to survive. Vladek still can't stop doing it in peacetime. This drives Artie crazy.
