The Nazi Gestapo were looking for Jews in hiding. They would not only kill the Jews they find in hiding but the host hiding the Jews as well. It became increasingly difficult to find a place to hide and Vladek did not want to responsible for the lives of his hosts. He also could get away with looking like a Polish German so travelling was a little easier.
