What do you think the bits and pieces of string that sam made hally tie together could symbolize?

The bits of string tied together symbolize freedom. Hally was unsure of everything and clung to those around him. The kite, and the fact he could control it alone, allowed Hally to realize he could do it (and many other things) alone.
