Both Mrs. Norris and Sir Thomas believe that Fanny should be treated as a family member. Yet, she is not to be treated as equal to the Betram sisters, Maria and Julia. Fanny is to remember her place. Throughout the novel, Mrs. Norris takes this to heart, and verbally abuses Fanny. Sir Thomas just ignores Fanny, till he gets back from Antigua.
