In Chapter 17, it is a hot August day and Maniac and his neighbors are playing in an open fire hydrant when a loud voice is heard above the crowd. The voice comes closer to Maniac, and he soon finds himself face to face with a black man pointing at him. The man calls Maniac “Whitey” and tells him that he needs to go home.
