Barbara rebels against traditional feminine roles in a few different ways. Although born into an upper class family, she chooses to live simply without servants and become a member of the Salvation Army. She rejects materialism, moves among the poor, and almost always navigate the boudaries between good and evil. Note, most of Barbara's rebellion involves turning her back on social status and money.
