What happens to Maggie in the end? Does she commit suicide or is she murdered?

Her death is uncertain. She has become a prostitute and is followed down by the river by an old, disgusting, unkempt man. Whether he murders her or she simply gives up and commits suicide to get out of her bad life, the reader is unsure. However, Jimmie reports to Maggie's mother that Maggie is dead.
