Who is Hecate?

Why is she so important to the witches in the play?

Hecate is queen of the witches. Many critics think she wasn't actually part of the play and was written in years later to spice things up. In Act 3, Scene 5, Hecate appears before the Witches to express her displeasure for not being invited to mess with Macbeth. That's really about the extent of her involvement.
