What are Macbeths visions and hallucinations and how does it play a role in the development of his character??

Remember that Macbeth's visions don't cause his insanity. His insanity causes his illusions.

He sees a dagger. He also cannot sleep. His guilt is causing some mental breakdown. So, unable to think for himself, he turns to the witches (dumb choice, wouldn't you say?) for thoughts.
