Lennox says that the journey to the castle was full of mayhem and chaos. The weather was unusually bad and unnatural things were happening like horses eating each other. This is meant to reflect the chaos of the castle the night of Duncan's murder. Elizabethans felt that the King was God's anointed leader. When the King is murdered, the Elizabethan universe is said to be turned into chaos.
