What is the function/purpose of the episode with Suzy? What does this accomplish?

In reference to The Red Convertible. I feel like it just showed how Henry was before. How full of life he seemed compared to when he returned.

usy represents natural beauty, innocence and freedom. Henry feels a sense of change when Susy takes Henry and Lyman to Alaska. She is almost an angel-figure with her long flowing hair. Susy's family is welcoming to Henry and he feels a sense of peace before going to war.
