There is water imagery both at the beginning of Chapter 4 and at the end. At the beginning of the chapter, the author uses the imagery of a riverbank spilling over without the support of her mother. At the end of the chapter she talks about needing a midwife to guide her own journey into motherhood. Again we see water imagery, "The ice had broken and black water swelled." There is also imagery of arms and the support and security the arms of another person can give.
