Jack is obsessed with hunting on a few levels. He feels the overwhelming desire to kill something. The meat does not interest him as much of the act of killing. He also feels the need to validate himself as a hunter and provider of food. Also killing something will undermine Ralph's leadership. It will show Jack's world of hunting and "fun" is preferable to Ralph's world of responsibility and discipline.
