Why does Ralph think that world,the understandable and lawful world,was slipping away. Once there was this and that; and now-- and the ship had gone (91). What is happening to the boys? Why is the understandable and lawful world slipping away?

The boys are no longer thinking responsibly. They are not working to get saved or even for their own good. They live in the moment for their primal indulgences. They are devolving into savagery and they don't even realize it.
