Why do the boys build the fire? How did they start if? How will they maintain it?

The boys start a fire with Piggy's glasses. Intiially they start an inferno that gets out of control. They could not maintain that kind of a fire even if they wanted to. Later they build small cooking fires and a signalfire. Jack's hunters are responsible for the signal fire but do not always keep it up.
