In many ways, Jack was a more effective leader than Ralph. Ralph could not intimidate and manipulate the boys as well as Jack could. Ralph believed the boys had inherent traits of fairness and goodness. Golding's main theme, however, argues that the boys naturally gravitate towards darkness and chaos.
