What purpose do common everyday rules serve in society?

Ex: Speed limit, no littering, teen curfew, no parking zones, etc...

If we didn't have rules, there would be chaos. Human nature has proven, since humans began, that we look out for our best interests. People inherently cheat, lie, steal and generally break rules to suit our own desires. Society (parents, teachers, government) have placed a series of checks and balances (rules) to make society run with some kind of order.
