What is the real reason Ralph and Jack go and look for the beast?

in chapter 7 of lord of the flies, there is a real reason why ralph and jack go to look for the beast. what is the real reason

I believe what it comes down to is proving exactly who has the skills and courage to lead the others. Jack is all about bravery and calling Ralph a coward. Thus, when jack leaves to hunt down the beast, Ralph understands that he has lost respect in the eyes of most of the boys. If he's the chief, he has to act like the chief.
