Their past life has been in an English boarding school where everything would be "proper." Piggy has always been the butt of jokes becfause of his size and his thick glasses. Jack has been the leader of the choir, a group who ultimately becomes the hunters and Jack becomes their most vicious "leader" as they pursue hunting. Ralph, because of his calm manner, is the logical choice for the leader and he is willing to take advice, a skill he probably learned at the boarding school.
