When Ralph first meets Piggy he is condescending.... he acts like he's too good for him, speaks to him in an inappropriate manner. None-the-less, the two seem to strike up a form of friendship, which initially is quite tenuous. You have to remember that Ralph thinks nothing of hurting Piggy by revealing his nickname in front of the other boys. Ralph knows Piggy is intelligent, but he hasn't yet needed the boy's help. He's weighing his options..... loyalty and desire for civilized behavior will come a bit later.
