Why is piggy unable to admit what has happened to simon?

Piggy cannot reconcile the fact that the boys killed Simon. Simon was trying to save the boys from themselves. I don't think Piggy took part in the frenzied murder but he was there. Piggy would rather pretend that Simon was still alive.
