The longer the boys are stranded on the island, the more uncivilized they become. Ralph's desire to keep order becomes increasingly more difficult, as the boys grow accustomed to their isolation from the real world. Where Ralph and Piggy continue to embrace the rules of civilization, the other boys, especially Jack, fight against them. After a while, most of the boys see no purpose in rules and regulations, and as time passes, they give up their hopes of being rescued.
