By chapter three Ralph is beginning to see things as they really are. Ralph's orientation is towards the group, while Jack is concerned with his own glory, which hinges again on militaristic values. Ralph is understanding the complexities of being a chief and that his influence demands manipulation of the boys as well as leadership.
