Ralph is trying to serve his "super-ego" but most of the boys, especially Jack, gravitate towards their "id" Ralph is trying to convince the boys that there is no beast. He is trying to use his "ego" to convince them. Unfortunately the boys gravitate towards their id: they want to believe in the existence of a beast.
