Ralph and Jack hit a glitch in their relationship when the fire goes out. Jack and the hunters were responsible for the fire, and they allowed it to die out. This was completely irresponsible and because of their mistake the ship passing on the horizon had no chance of seeing the signal on the island.

Of sorry, in this chapter Ralph's relationship with Piggy changes too. Piggy, like Ralph, also chastises Jack about the fire, but Jack hits Piggy, and Ralph sticks up for him. Ralph re-lights the fire with Piggy's glasses making him somewhat of a hero. Jack hates Ralph from that moment on.
