How does Ralph develop himself to actually survive?

Ralph quickly understands what motivates these boys. Although he really matures we can't really say he survives through his wits. In the end Ralph would have been killed if the sailor had not shown up. It was Golding's deus ex machina (God in the machine) that saves Ralph in the end.
