How does Jack maintain a balance of his impulses and conscious?

Jack attempts to balance these two for a time but eventually relents to his overwhelming urge to kill and control everything. In the early chapters he shows signs of compromise like at the vote for chief and when they first explore the island. He even apologizes for letting the signal fire out but only because he feels the boys disapproval about a ship that passed by. He quickly relents to his primal impulses though.
