Any thought about a beast scares many of the boys on the island. At this point in time, Ralph and Piggy are still somewhat in charge and so they work to calm the fears that seem real to the others. By suggesting that the boy's "vision" was a nightmare, they are somewhat able to ease the fears which later dominate the story.
