Golding's purpose in writing Lord of the Flies was to understand why people do bad things.

I think it was more to delve into the nature of human nature. Golding concludes that there is darkness within all of us that lurks beneath the choices we make. Without a society with rules and order, most children (at least boys) will let their dark side consume them.
