The side of the island on which the boys have made their temporary living quarters makes Ralph feel optimistic. The boys see mirages that allow them to dream of rescue, and Ralph has hopes that a passing ship will see their fire. On the other side of the island, however, Ralph sees no end to the water on the horizon, and no hope for rescue. is overwhelmed by the expanse of nothingness and feels hopeless.
