(Chapter 5 and 6) What does Simon mean when he says, “maybe [the beast] is only us” (page 97)?

In this quote, Simon is alluding to the fact that although there might be a beast on the island.... the beast was not physical, but rather the evil that was tearing the group of boys apart from the inside out.
