Much of LOF has to do with human psychology. Certainly early on any intelligence could be traced to Piggy yet he is humiliated and isolated. Even Ralph falters as a leader to the boys. It would seem that Jack ends up with the most influence because he inflicts both fear and violence. The boys are looking for comfort by way of someone they perceive can physically protect and provide for them. Jack's influence works so well because on a fundamental level, the boys want to be told what to do. THey want the boundaries of a dictator because this brings them comfort. Ralph's responsibility makes them feel vulnerable. Violence and fear inspires conference in the boys as long as they feel they are submitting to a greater power.
