Josie is beginning to understand the pressures John faces and feels sorry for him. In turn, she begins to understand him as well.

"His eyes couldn't settle in the one place and if I didn't know him better I could have sworn he was on drugs." (pg 132)

"He shook his head, clamping his mouth together into a thin line." (pg133)
