What does the narrator mean when he says, “…watch their bodies turn disloyal” (Reynolds 21)?

The narrator is referring to the children's parents' bodies. Bit, John John, Francy, and Trista each have a parent who is suffering from cancer... "their bodies turning disloyal" refers to their parents' bodies... and the debilitating aspects of the disease.
