Logan 3
The title character is a Deep Sleep Operative in a dystopic future where nobody is allowed to live past the age of 21. Those that try to avoid the inevitable are called Runners and men like Logan, known as Sandmen, are charged with stopping them order to make sure the carefully planned system remains smoothly operating. The method of stopping Runners involves a level pain unknown to those who follow the system as designed. After another fulfilling day at his job, Logan has just twenty-four hours before he turns 21. And that’s when thing finally get real for the rather unlikable protagonist of the story.
Jessica 6
Jessica’s brother Doyle was a Runner whom Logan witnessed die at the hands of a gang of malevolent pre-teens hopped up on drugs that make Alex Delarge and his droogs look like choirboys. Jessica confuses Logan for her brother through a technological glitch and he decides to exploit her knowledge of the Runner underground by using his last day to infiltrate the rebels and destroy this thing called Sanctuary that drives them. Jessica is resistant to helping him at first because he is a Sandman, but her dedication to the idea of the existence of Sanctuary and a way out of the imposition of a warrant of execution being imposed at birth convinces her to help him.
Francis
Francis is another Sandman and friend of Logan. Until Logan decides to become a Runner for real at which point he is simply another target to be stopped. And Francis won’t stop no matter how far Logan runs.
Ballard
Ballard is a mythic figure characterized by Logan as the world’s oldest man as well as a boogeyman invented to scare young kids. He seems to be more legend than man and he is a central figure in the development of the unproven tall tales of the existence of Sanctuary. Logan initially is dismissive of the idea that Ballard ever even existed, but eventually his run with Jessica becomes a quest track down Ballard and get the answers he has been looking for. Eventually, the legends prove true: Ballard exists and double the age at which he should have been executed. But there is something else about Ballard that is even more insane: Logan is already familiar with this person.
