For a large part of the novel, the revolution seems far away... the people on the ranch are uninvolved adnd their only connection to the revolution is through the stories they hear. Later, the revolution makes its way to the ranch... Gertrudis leaves with a captain of the rebel army, and Tita supports the rebel army's cause; supplies are hard to get, and famine spreads across the land; violence also becomes widespread.
