When Rosaura returned from San Antonio. Mama Elena's death causes Rosaura so much pain that she goes into delivery before her time.... as a result, she is weakened and sick after the baby's delivery. Regardless, Tita comes to see that Rosaura is determined to be mother to her child.... ill or not. She also has determined that she will make her infant, Esperanza, follow the family tradition. Esperanza will not be allowed to marry and will take care of her in her old age.

Over time, Tita realizes that her sister is actually very ill and suffers from digestive problems. She has also gained wait, something that has intefered with her relationship with her husband. Rosaura even goes so far as to admit to Tita that she hasn't asked her for help because she believed her sister was having an affair with her husband. Rosaura has no idea that her sister's special cooking is at the root of her porblems, though, she is aware that her husband changed after the lights came out of Mama's darkroom.
