In Chapter 2, the author intervenes as narrator, describing Pi telling his story. I think Martel does this to flash forward to give us a peek into Pi as an elderly man. We can juxtapose this with Pi as a young boy. It also frames his tale as a story, a narrative that is both descriptive and reflective.
